The mission of SPCA International is simple but vast: to advance the safety and well-being of animals.
PAWS-Patas helps roughly 400 animals annually, providing essential medical care and finding permanent homes locally and internationally. In addition to the care, PAWS-Patas brings to animals they also increase public awareness of animal welfare issues through humane education programs. Late last month, our team in Iraq urgently picked up Laurel from a U.S. Naval Base. Laurel’s eye was severely injured, but that never stopped him from wagging his tail. Laurel exemplified will, determination, trust and unconditional love. With heavy hearts we must report that Laurel has passed away due to a serious disease.
Our partners at the Tanzania Animal Welfare Society (TAWESO) in Africa work tirelessly to improve the lives of working donkeys across the country. With a high demand for donkey skin and meat in China, slaughterhouses (also known as abattoirs) have begun opening up all over Tanzania, cruelly treating and slaughtering donkeys for profit. With true determination and courage, TAWESO stood up to fight this horrible practice. Their efforts culminated in the imminent closure of slaughterhouses and now the donkeys of Tanzania have a glimmer of hope.
In 2015 Venezuela’s economic crisis began, as inflation rates have risen above 700% people are finding it almost impossible to provide for their families and pets. Red de Apoyo Canino, amidst this financial crisis, continues to bring essential medical care, education, and support to Venezuela’s impoverished citizens.
Like human victims of war and disaster, animals also suffer during times of crisis. Abandoned when their families flee from bombings and gunfire, animals are left to fend for themselves. In countries so greatly impacted by war, food, and medical are almost non-existent for these forgotten animals. SPCA International is charged with helping these animal victims, to ensure their safety and care is not overlooked.
This darling cat took a U.S. military base in Egypt by storm with Killer looks, Killer licks, and Killer cuteness. OMG – we can’t get over this guy! Killer was rescued by the SPCAI team last week. Now he is safe and sound in his new St. Paul, Minnesota, home awaiting Corporal Nicolas’s return from deployment with the Army National Guard. Their relationship is captured in a series of Killer-cute photos and stories Corporal Nicolas shared with us.
As most of our readers will remember, Spirit, a shepherd mix found in Romania, suffered unspeakable cruelty at the hands of an unknown assailant. Today, Spirit is a different dog. She has recovered by leaps and bounds from her injuries. In this article you can see a video of her playing which demonstrates just how much her life has changed.
Ahead of the Summer Olympics in Brazil last year, we received a report of stray cat colonies being poisoned at a local airport. Luckily, with your help SPCAI was able to intervene – the poisoning stopped and we initiated a trap, neuter and release (TNR) program. The program is an ongoing success and we have a put together a photo gallery of the cats that were saved – all thanks to your generosity.
We love to visit our partner organizations around the world. Visiting our partners allows us to see how they are putting our grant funds and veterinary supply aid to use – through spay and neuter clinics, while treating special needs cases or responding to animals in emergency situations. SPCAI Executive Director Meredith Ayan visited our partners in the Dominican Republic recently and was thrilled by their trailblazing work.
In the April of 2016 SPCA International learned about Syrian Association for Rescuing Animals while trying to rescue a dog named Fox whose refugee family missed him dearly. Through that first rescue to the construction of a large facility to help them expand SPCA International is honored to assist this amazing organization.
