When powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela in late June, they left behind widespread devastation for families, communities, and countless animals. Entire neighborhoods were demolished, and local rescuers suddenly found themselves facing an overwhelming crisis.
Because SPCA International has been supporting animal welfare efforts in Venezuela for nearly a decade, we already had trusted shelter partners on the ground. We’ve worked alongside dedicated rescuers and organizations that have spent years caring for vulnerable animals, strengthening communities, and building lifesaving programs. So when we learned about the earthquake, we knew we had to act quickly.
We rushed $20,000 in emergency funding to our shelter partners to help provide free veterinary care, food, and emergency rescue services in the hardest-hit communities. These funds are helping injured animals receive treatment, ensuring pets and community animals have access to food, and supporting rescue teams working tirelessly to reach animals in need.
We also provided direct emergency assistance to one of our longtime shelter partners that cares for more than 500 cats and dogs in affected communities. As they faced damaged facilities, limited resources, and growing demand for help, we wanted to ensure they had the support they needed to continue caring for every animal depending on them.
In addition to emergency funding, we shipped critical supplies to assist with relief efforts, including:
- Medical supplies
- Essential medications
- Humane traps
- Collars
- Pet food
- Flea, tick, and parasite preventatives
These supplies are helping local teams continue their lifesaving work while ensuring animals receive the care they desperately need during this difficult time.
The road to recovery will not be easy. Rebuilding communities, restoring veterinary services, and caring for displaced and injured animals will take time. But one thing is certain: the compassionate people on the ground in Venezuela are not facing this alone.
We are heartbroken by the loss and destruction Venezuela has endured. Our hearts are with every family, every rescuer, and every animal whose life has been affected by this disaster.
