Big Cat Public Safety Act (H.R. 1380 and S.2561)

  • This bill prohibits the possession of big cats such as lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, cougars or any hybrid of such species by individuals who are not licensed by the USDA.
  • Exemptions are included for sanctuaries, universities and zoos.
  • Any current owners would be required to register their animals with the government so that first responders and animal control officers are aware of the animals’ presence in their communities.
  • This bill also restricts direct contact between the public and big cats.

We now have the opportunity to let members of Congress know that their constituents support stronger protection measures for captive big cats.
