Type of Organization
In 2011, three retired women encountered an emaciated dog chained to a tree. They named her Fiona and rushed her to get the help she desperately needed, but despite their best efforts, Fiona did not make it. At this moment, the women decided they had to do something to change how animals in Mexico were treated. In 2013, they officially founded Fiona Animal Refuge with the mission to end animal cruelty in Hidalgo, Mexico, by educating the public and making essential resources available to all. The non-profit organization offers free spay and neuter, and vaccination services to pet parents in the community. They also provide needy street animals with essential medical care, food and shelter.
SPCA International is proud to support Fiona Animal Refuge’s life-saving work. We’re so proud of the tremendous difference they are making to the well-being of the animals in Hidalgo.
