Their Work

Tailwaggers for Life runs a rescue “farm” for canines, where dogs are brought while awaiting adoption. The organization has also rescued rabbits, exotic birds, goats, potbellied pigs and several horses (including 14 last year alone).  Tailwaggers’ extensive spay and neuter programs for cats and dogs bring low-cost surgeries to pet owners in 11 counties throughout Alabama and Mississippi.  Innovations such as organizing transportation and other assistance ensure that everyone interested is able to access a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.

Concentrating on spay/neuter has made a big difference in Tailwaggers’ home county in a short time: the shelter’s intake numbers are down to less than 300 animals a year compared to 1100 the first year of operation (2005).

This year, Tailwaggers has some ambitious projects planned, including converting the rescue farm to solar power, and extending the successful spay/neuter program to additional counties.

SPCA International is proud to honor this program for its aggressive and successful campaign to spay and neuter companion animals, as well as its success in fostering and re-homing dogs.  We are pleased that the Shelter of the Week grant will fund additional spay/neuter clinics.
