Their Work

Adopción de Gatos y Perros (AGAPE) is a nonprofit organization that rescues dogs and cats that are abused and/or abandoned in the city and its surroundings. They seek a permanent loving home for the young and healthy ones, while the old and sick remain in the shelter where they receive the care and love needed for the rest of their days. The shelter volunteers frequent different events held in the city hoping to sell items such as t-shirts, shelter pins, pens, pet supplies (food, beds, etc.) in support of the shelter.

They also benefit from contributions, donations, and last but not least the sponsor plan program. The sponsor program, while a bit of a challenge in Columbian culture, helps to give all dogs and cats the chance to visit a veterinarian regularly and receive the specialized care they need. Individuals agree to sponsor a needy pet. Currently, the animals receive vet care when welcomed at the shelter or when there is an undetermined health problem. The sponsorship program was conceived in order to ensure the health quality of the four legged friends.

They also promote sterilization (spay and neutering) as a mechanism to control overpopulation on the streets and are part of educational campaigns regarding responsible pet ownership. The shelter serves as a permanent home for a population of 150 animals, including cats and dogs. They also aid other animals in need that are not part of the active population at the shelter, including street dogs and cats, and others belonging to low-income families and the community.

SPCA International is happy to honor AGAPE with a Shelter of the Week Grant Award, giving them the ability to make much needed repairs to the shelter roof that was damaged during the recent rainy season.
