Their Work

The Olympic Animal Sanctuary has a unique mission: to provide a home for animals, mostly dogs, whom due to behavioral issues such as biting people, killing other animals, etc. are considered unadoptable by even “no kill” shelters and face death due to their lack of proper socialization.  The staff at the Sanctuary work tirelessly to rehabilitate these animals, first by simply providing a safe space for them to relax and then by working with them on addressing the fears that contribute to their problem behaviors.  It is the Sanctuary’s belief that it is the responsibility of humans to care for all domestic animals, even those whose behaviors are problematic for people, no matter how inconvenient it may be.  There are no “bad” animals; these are simply animals who have failed to conform to societal expectations, largely because of the breeding and socialization provided by humans (for example, dogs bred and trained to fight).

The Sanctuary also provides a permanent home to some large snakes, former “pets” which, due to their size and potentially dangerous nature, have been abandoned or abused.  (The Sanctuary does not condone or support the trade in wild animals of any kind.)

SPCA International is proud to honor the Olympic Animal Sanctuary for its innovative efforts to rescue and rehabilitate dogs and other animals who are on “death row” because of behavioral issues.  We are glad that the Shelter grant has completed the necessary funding for a small dog area at the Sanctuary.
