Life Span
The lifespan for an English bulldog averages around eight years.
Typical Behavior
Bulldogs possess a wonderful temperament and are very loyal to their family. The breed is known to be very laid back, easygoing and great with children.
Care Requirements
Generally, it is easy to care for your bulldog, but additional veterinary care may be needed due to health-related problems that tend to develop with their joints, eyes and breathing passage as they age. Bulldogs have an active digestive system and pass gas often, so this breed is not recommended for someone with a sensitive nose or stomach.
A bulldog will need to have the area between its facial wrinkles cleaned daily with a damp cloth in order to remove any particles that may have lodged there.
While some bulldogs would not care to exercise a day in their life, others are a ball of energy. It is recommended that your bulldog is walked daily or allowed in the backyard to get some exercise.
Proper Habitat and Habitat Maintenance Requirements
Due to a bulldog’s low profile body, it is sensitive to hot and cold weather. Bulldogs can overheat or become cold very easily. It is recommended that you do not leave your bulldog unattended for any length of time outside.
Dietary Requirements
A high-quality dog food is recommended for your bulldog. It is important to choose a food that is for small-to-mediu-sized dogs with smaller pieces of kibble soft enough for your bulldog to chew.
Financial Considerations for a Bulldog:
Veterinary
Regular veterinary care is recommended for all dogs, including bulldogs. A yearly check up runs approximately $160; year shots are approximately $60.
It is also strongly recommended that your dog be spayed or neutered.
Grooming
Bulldogs do not require regular grooming beyond daily cleaning of the area between its facial wrinkles with a damp cloth in order to remove any particles that may have lodged there. A monthly bath is all that is needed to keep your bulldog’s coat healthy.
Animal Sitter
Bulldogs are great for apartments and smaller homes so finding a sitter should be easy. Most dog sitters will charge around $30 a day to watch your dog. A boarding facility will charge on average of $20 a day for a medium-sized dog with no additional care requirements.
Food
A high quality food for small-to-medium dogs can cost $12 to $25 per bag.
Interesting Facts about English Bulldogs:
- It is estimated that there are 14 difference species of bulldogs, English bulldogs being the most popular.
- Almost all English and French bulldogs are born by cesarean, due to the size of the puppies and the small birth canal.
- Billdogs were originally bred to be fight or guard dogs; however, after years of breeding they are now one of the best dog breeds for families with children.
