Story:
Miki found her soldiers, Catrina and Phoebe, one day in November while the soldiers were working in the mailroom at a Forward Operating Base east of Baghdad. Miki just walked right thru the door like she owned the place, meowing and rubbing up against Catrina’s legs. For months, Catrina and Phoebe fed her and gave her love. Miki would often go visit other soldiers too, but she always came back to them.
Miki was always helping boost the mailroom soldiers’ moral. She made them laugh with her antics - whether it was from her raspy meow, her first encounter with cat nip, or her lazy attitude in the office; she always made their day brighter. Miki followed the soldiers everywhere, to the bathrooms, the showers (which she enjoyed, surprisingly), and even all the way across the FOB one time. She made them happy just being around.
But soon, disaster struck. Then base leadership found out about the group of soldiers who befriended Miki and threatened to euthanize her. Catrina tried to get Miki to another base for safety while she waited to hear if SPCA International could help, but Miki always came back. Each time, they were scared the leadership would discover her and euthanize her on the spot. Luckily, SPCA International was able to rescue her just in the nick of time.
Catrina explains, “We were so worried and scared that she would be discovered and euthanized, or that we would have to turn her away for good. We are so grateful that there are people out there, like the staff at SPCA International, who are willing to go out of their way to help animals like Miki and soldiers like us. We plan to donate every year to SPCA International so more animals can be as lucky as Miki is.”
